Monsoon-proofing your Lucknow home: plumbing, paint and pest checks
· 6 min read · By the GoFixit team
Lucknow gets roughly 900 mm of rain across July, August and September, much of it in heavy bursts. Older neighbourhoods like Hazratganj, Aminabad and parts of Chowk have drainage that can back up within hours; newer pockets in Gomti Nagar and Vibhuti Khand handle the volume better but still see seepage through poorly sealed terraces. A weekend of small jobs before the first heavy rain saves much bigger bills in August. Here is what to actually do.
Plumbing checks (worth a single half-day visit)
- Test every drain in the house with a bucket of water — bathroom, kitchen, balcony, terrace
- Have a plumber clear slow drains before they fully block under rain load
- Check the overhead tank overflow pipe — a stuck float means a constant overflow onto your terrace
- Inspect under-sink and behind-washing-machine joints for the slow drips that turn into puddles
- Confirm the location of your main water shut-off valve before you need it at 2 am
Waterproofing and paint
Walk your terrace and look for cracked tiles, missing grout, and any spots where water can pool. Even small cracks let water in over a season and show up as inside-wall seepage by September. A spot-repair before the rain is cheap. Repainting a damp wall in October is not.
On north-facing or shaded walls, watch for early mould patches now — they will explode once humidity sits above 80%.
Pest entry points
- Seal gaps around AC pipe entry holes, exhaust fans, and bathroom vents
- Check window mesh for tears (mosquitoes find every gap once it rains)
- Book a pre-monsoon cockroach and termite treatment — a single preventive visit beats three reactive ones
- Clear standing water on terraces, balconies, and AC outdoor unit trays
The boring jobs that matter most
Get your inverter and battery checked. Lucknow power cuts spike during the monsoon, and a battery that has quietly degraded over winter will fail on the first long outage. Test your geyser too — humid weather is rough on the heating element and a pre-monsoon descale is cheaper than a mid-July replacement.
On GoFixit, plumbing in Lucknow starts at ₹149 and most monsoon-prep jobs are bundled at a fixed quote, so you can book once and get the whole list done without surprise charges.
